Vortex Merging in a 11⁄2-Layer Fluid on an f Plane*

چکیده
Mass, angular momentum, and energy budgets are examined in an analytical model of vortex merging relevant to midlatitude mesoscale eddies. The vortices are baroclinic and cyclogeostrophic. The fluid surrounding them is assumed to remain quiescent. It is shown that due to this surrounding fluid, angular momentum is conserved when expressed in both the inertial and rotating frames of reference. Lens-shaped solid-body vortices can conserve mass, angular momentum, and energy when they merge. If an upper-layer of thickness H1 is included in the model, the merged vortex must have either less energy or mass than the sum of the original two vortices. A more complex model of the vortex azimuthal structure is then considered, which includes a constant vorticity shell surrounding the solid-body core. If the shell is large compared to the core, the mass, angular momentum, and energy can all be conserved in the merged vortex. However, if the shell is small, the merged vortex must have less energy or mass than in the solid-body case.

متن کاملInteraction of a monopole vortex with an isolated topographic feature in a three-layer geophysical flow
In the frame of a three-layer, quasi-geostrophic analytical model of an f -plane geophysical flow, the Lagrangian advection induced by the interaction of a monopole vortex with an isolated topographic feature is addressed. Two different cases when the monopole is located either within the upper or the middle layer are of our interest. In the bottom layer, there is a delta-function topographic f...
متن کاملThe effect of ageostrophy on the stability of thin oceanic vortices
This paper examines the stability of vortices in a two-layer ocean on the f -plane. The mean depth h̄1 of the upper layer is assumed to be much smaller than the depth h̄2 of the lower layer. Using the primitive equations, we derive an asymptotic criterion for baroclinic instability of compensated (i.e. confined to the upper layer) vortices. Surprisingly, it coincides exactly with a similar criter...
متن کاملEffect of Square Rod Aspect Ratio on Vortex Shedding Downstream the Rod and Heat Transfer Enhancement from the Neighboring Flat Plate
A rectangular rod is placed in a flow field flowing parallel to a flat plate. Effect of chord-thickness ratio of rectangular rod on developing vortex shedding downstream to the rod is studied. Then, for each one of the aspect ratios, the distance of the rod from the neighboring flat plate is reduced until the rod sticks to the flat plate. In each case, the effect of the flat plate boundary laye...
